watercolour paper stretching?
i need to stretch a piece of watercolour paper.
i dont have all that useful stuff like a board or gum tape.
are there any replacements or alternative ways i can stretch the paper?
You can use bull dog clips to hold your paper for stretching. You will have to have something to clip the paper to, however. A sheet of masonite will work as long as you don’t get it sopping wet. You can also staple the paper to a board.
To stretch your paper you will want to soak it for at least 10 minutes in cold water. Allow the excess water to drip off the paper. While it is still moist (not wet but more than damp) fasten your paper to the board with either your clips or the staples. To staple the paper, place a staple in the center of each side about a quarter inch from the edge of the paper. Then work your way out from the center staple. Allow the paper to dry. It is now stretched and will resist warping when you rewet it as you are painting.
In order to stretch your paper with staples, your board has to be of a soft material like compressed cellulose. They used to use this extensively in building, but it has been replaced by other materials. It is nearly impossible to find. Try your local lumber companies.
Edit: I beg to differ. I paint on 140# paper using very wet washes. I have not had a problem with warping using staples, unless I didn’t get the staples in far enough from the deckled edges, or if I didn’t use enough staples on each side.
If you use 300# paper you don’t even have to worry about stretching. The paper is heavy enough to keep from warping on it’s own.
