Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit, “BOOTMGR is missing”. Help?
Hi there. A few days ago i decided that I was going to restore my laptop back to it’s original boot factory settings. I began the process and as the machine started to wipe the drive and re-install everything, my power went out; most likely due to the wire at the back getting pulled out accidently. Anyway I panic for a moment and try to switch the laptop back on. It powers on and the suddenly after the boot logo i get hit with a message saying “BOOTMGR is missing”. Thankfully i had another computer at the ready and i researched that problem. I found out that you get that message if there is no OS on the machine or maybe that bootmgr its self is missing seeing as its a file, i think… Now I was wondering, Can I install XP on the laptop or does It have to be Vista and does the disk quality, e.g. if its a little scratched, can that cause the installation to fail?
It’s a HP laptop, 2 gig ram, fairly new computer with Windows Vista Premium and thats about it. Hope anyone can help.

There’s a small program on the Vista DVD which will put BOOTMGR back, it’s called bootsect.
Boot from your Vista DVD, when the install window pops up select Repair. In the repair options, select Command prompt from there you will be able to run bootsect.
You can find bootsect in the BOOT folder, and you can change to that folder by typing “CD boot” into the command prompt. Then type “bootsect /nt60 SYS /Force” to put BOOTMGR back.
It can also put NTLDR back instead, which is used by Windows XP instead of BOOTMGR. To do that use use “bootsect /nt52 SYS /Force” instead.
You can install XP on the laptop, but it’s not a simple task. The DVD disk should be fine even with a few scratches as the disk will have error correction built in.
It can be quite tricky to install XP on a new machine like yours. It will most likely fail very early into the installation with a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death). This is because XP lacks SATA drivers which may be required for it to access your hard disk.
Your Harddisk and DVD drive are likely to SATA devices, which weren’t around when XP was released as XP is 8 years old. XP only has the drivers for PATA/ IDE devices which aren’t really around anymore. In the past what you would do is give windows these necessary SATA drivers on a floppy during the installation phase, but most of todays PC’s no longer have Floppy drives to do that.
What you can sometimes do is go into the bios and disable SATA or AHCI, or sometimes there will be an emulataion option. XP will then see them as PATA devices. However in my case, this stoped Vista seeing them (I had a dual XP/ Vista install), so comes with it’s own problems.
Otherwise you will have to download the XP SATA drivers for your laptop, then use a program called Nlite which will use them and your XP CD to create a new XP installation CD that has your SATA drivers built in.

It’s all rather complex, so you’re probably better off with Vista or Windows 7. If it were an older laptop, you wouldn’t have a problem.
