Which is the best media for long-term archival storage of data?
I want to store some family documents very long term so will also store the necessary hardware and application software (PDF would be favourite, I think). But which media to use? I understand many corporations still use magnetic tape, and many others have now moved to optical disk (I have some of those Gold Archival disks) but I read somewhere recently that flash memory may be even more stable and longer lasting. Is this true or even possible?

Paper and ink. Nothing electronic will last. 3.5 inch floppies? Or *gasp* 5 inch floppies. All the data unreadable. All the data in the world will be inaccessible in 50 years without a serious and consistent policy of updating storage media. Even if you store the hardware and software will there be a machine that can read the software, or is compatible with the hardware, let alone the people who know how to operate it?
I am an old fart, but there is a serious business opportunity for someone who will be around in 25 years in ensuring that you retain the skills and means to access data on obsolete media.
The written word – legible and retrievable after thousands of years. Of course, clay tablets and bas relief on stone last even longer, but there are portability issues.
